Catherine Martin Captures the New Miu Miu Upcycled Collection
Through her directorial debut, ‘Grande Envie.’
Miu Miu‘s latest collaborator is the four-time Academy Award-winning costume, production and set-designer, Catherine Martin. We know, it’s a pretty impressive resume, right? Well, now Martin will add “director” to that list, as she makes her directorial debut with a new, Miu Miu-supported short film.
Titled Grand Envie, the film showcases the newest instalment of the Miu Miu Upcycled collection, following on from 2024’s release with Emma Corrin. The Upcylced collection debuted back in 2o20 and offers a curated collection of vintage pieces reworked and transformed by Miu Miu. Created to promote circular design practices, the collection sources pieces from vintage clothing markets and stores around the world.
Martin’s film stars Callina Liang, Daisy Ridley, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Diana Silvers and Eliot Sumner, plus a special appearance from Willem Dafoe. Telling the story of a ghost love triangle, the film takes inspiration from the late 1920s and early ’30s, capturing “a dynamic, in-between period, between the world wars, where great clashes and contrasts in style were taking place,” according to Martin.
Celebrating themes of escapism and creative freedom, the collection takes inspiration from the 1920s photographs of Jacques Henri Lartigue. “It draws together things that don’t necessarily belong together: lingerie with striped t-shirts, denim with eveningwear and rowing blazers. There are clashes of the pretty and the vulgar, but brought together in a beautiful way, just like it was in the 1920s and 1930s. What fascinates me about the collection is this constant juxtaposition of the utilitarian and the precious,” adds Martin.
Capturing the collection via a series of stills is Michella Bredahl, aiming to capture the ways that “the past, present and future remain mysterious to every age.”
