Angel Reese Responds to the WNBA's Racial Abuse Investigation
The organization launched an investigation following fans comments towards Reese.
Just one game into the 2025 WNBA season, Angel Reese became “the quickest player in WNBA history to record at least 450 points and 450 rebounds in her career. She now has 474 points and 463 rebounds to her name,” Sports Illustrated reported. Her performance has earned full support, yet the WNBA has had to launch an investigation regarding racial abuse.
At a game between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, Reese competed against her ultimate rival, Caitlin Clark. However, the rivalry went from playful to harmful as fans reportedly spewed racial comments at Reese. As CNN reported, “The WNBA said it was investigating reports of abuse directed towards the second-year forward during Chicago’s loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday.”
The Chicago Sky guard responded on May 21, thanking the organization for its support. “Obviously there’s no place in this league for that,” she said. “I think the WNBA and our team and our organization has done a great job supporting me.” Later she added, “I’ve gone through so many different things in the past couple of years in my life, but I think just having the support and this love, and being a part of an organization that really supports me and loves me is something I just couldn’t imagine not being a part of.”
Reese’s head coach, Tyler Marsh, added: “She’s handled it great. I mean, for her, it’s about basketball, so I think that’s where her mind is at and for us we want to be as locked in as possible to our game plan and what we want to do moving forward into Thursday,” Marsh said. “I mean, Angel’s a winner. Angel’s a competitor, and she wants to be there for her teammates and we’re certainly there for her as well.”
